Step 1: Pick your new provider
First, decide which new mobile carrier (e.g., Telcel, AT&T, Movistar, etc.) you want to join. Explore their plans and choose the best fit for your needs.
Step 2: Get your portability NIP
This 4-digit NIP confirms your intent to move your number. It's easy to get:
From your current phone (the number you want to keep), simply dial 051 or send a text message with the word NIP to the number 051.
You'll receive your unique 4-digit PIN which is valid for 5 business days. If it expires, just dial or text 051 again for a new one.
Step 3: Gather your essentials
To make your request smooth, have these ready:
Your active mobile number.
Your official ID: This could be your INE/IFE, passport, or professional license.
Remember that your ID needs to match the name registered to the phone number.
Step 4: Make the switch with your new provider
Now, you can officially tell your new carrier you're joining them:
Head to one of their customer service centers, an authorized store, or their website.
Let them know you want to "port your existing number".
They'll guide you through a simple request form.
Hand them over your official ID, your NIP and the phone number you are keeping.
Step 5: Wait for your number to move
The porting process typically takes from 24 to 48 business hours once your new carrier processes your valid request.
Your old SIM will keep working until the switch is complete. You'll know it's done when your old SIM loses service – that's your cue to swap it out.
Once your old SIM stops working, insert the new SIM card that your new provider gave you.
Give your phone a quick restart and finally try making and receiving a call or sending a text. Everything should be working correctly!
