1. What is number portability?
It is the right of telephone users to keep their phone number when changing service providers.
2. Who regulates number portability in Mexico?
The Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) is the body responsible for regulating and supervising the process, ensuring users' rights.
3. What do I need to port my number?
To be the line holder, have a valid official identification, and an active SIM for the number to be ported.
4. How long does the portability process take?
Generally, it is completed within 24 to 48 business hours from when the new company processes the request.
5. Is there any cost to port my number?
No, number portability is a completely free process for the user.
6. How do I start the portability process?
You must go to a customer service center, an authorized distributor, or the website of the company you wish to switch to.
7. What is the portability PIN and how do I get it?
It is a 4-digit code to confirm your request. You get it by dialing 051 or calling 051 from the number to be ported. It is valid for 5 days.
8. What happens to my balance or services if I port my number?
When porting, you lose any balance and active services (packages, promotions) you had with your previous company.
9. Can I cancel the portability once it has started?
Yes, you have 10 business days from when it became effective to return to your original company, but you will not be able to request portability again within the next 30 days.
10. What do I do if I have problems with my portability?
Contact your new company. If the problem persists, file a report with the IFT or PROFECO.
