What is "Throttling" or Low-Speed data?

If you have an "unlimited" cellphone plan, you should know that this service comes with an important condition: the Fair Usage Policy (FUP). Below, we'll look at what this means.

What is speed reduction or throttling?

The reduction of navigation data speed is activated automatically by your service provider when you have consumed the amount of high-speed gigabytes (GB) included in your plan.

The data service is not cut off, but your connection's maximum speed is drastically reduced, and this process is known as "Throttling." While on 4G you navigate at Megabits per second (Mbps), after the FUP, your speed drops to Kilobits per second (Kbps).

What does browsing at low speed imply?

Once the speed is reduced, most data-intensive activities become much slower. For example:

  • Streaming: Watching videos on platforms like YouTube or Netflix or having fluid video calls will be very difficult, as the video may constantly pause (gets stuck in buffering).

  • Web Content: Although sending text messages (like WhatsApp) and basic map usage will still work, web pages and social media sites with many photos or videos will take longer to load.

  • Downloads: Downloading files or updating large applications can take significantly longer.

In summary: The data is "unlimited" to keep you connected, but the speed is limited to prevent intensive consumption. You will only regain maximum speed when you make a top-up or your plan renews.
