How do Unlimited Service plans work?

It is crucial to understand how mobile plans that are advertised as Unlimited Services work, specially when it comes to mobile data service.

Services that are REALLY unlimited

In most plans, the following benefits are unlimited and without restrictions for interpersonal use:

  • Voice Calls (Minutes): National, to the United States and Canada.

  • Text Messages (SMS): National and often international.

Mobile Internet Data

Mobile Internet (data) is not completely unlimited at maximum speed. Instead, a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) is applied.

  • High-Speed Limit: Your plan includes a specific amount of gigabytes (GB) at the maximum available speed (4G or 5G, for example).

  • Speed Reduction (Throttling): Once you consume these high-speed GB (the FUP quota), the data service does not stop, but the navigation speed is drastically reduced (to 512 Kbps, 256 Kbps, or less) for the remainder of the billing period.

Unlimited Social Media

If your plan offers Unlimited Social Media (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), the general rule is:

  • YES, it's unlimited: Text messages and basic browsing of the feed or timeline.

  • NO, it's not unlimited and consumes your GB:

    • Video calls (even on WhatsApp).

    • High-resolution videos (streaming) or videos hosted on third-party platforms (like YouTube within Facebook).

    • Downloading files, music, or large multimedia content.

    • Operating system updates or cloud backups.

Key Recommendation:

Always check the terms and conditions and the Fair Usage Policy of your plan. This way, you will know exactly how many high-speed GB you have before the speed is reduced.
